There can be few more iconic places to celebrate Songkran than the famous Wat Arun or Temple of Dawn on the Chao Phraya River. Here, people can come and experience the most moving and ancient aspects of the festival by helping the bathe some of the city’s most sacred Buddha images. This way of making merit is believed to ensure good luck for the New Year. Many people visit Wat Arun as one of nine temples they will go to when they make merit for the New Year. Other temples in the Rattanokosin area include Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Phra Kaeo or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Suthat Thepphawararam, Wat Chana Songkhram, Wat Boworn, Wat Benchamabophit, Wat Rakhang Khositaram, and Wat Kanlaya.
Do note that this is an alcohol-free zone for the duration of the Songkran ceremonies.
